So today I have an optometrist appointment. I always get super stressed out when I choose glasses. It can take me hours. It's time to replace the glasses I have (dark tortoiseshell Chanel frames) because they're a little heavy, and I am ready for a change. I'd like to go for something lighter in color, like maybe the Gucci glasses at top left (they're green! my favorite color!). But I'm afraid I'll get tired of them. I like the top right glasses, but they're a lot like what I have now. The Prada ones (bottom left) are a cool grey color, but I ithink the wide sides might be annoying? And I love the slight cat eye look of the Kate Spade glasses (bottom right) but maybe that won't look good on my round face? Suggestions? Help? Please!

in the press: HOW award
For the third year in a row, delphine has won a HOW design award! Thanks, HOW! This year our adorable squirrel business card holders were honored. They're letterpressed in soy-based chocolate brown ink and are pressed on super fun German wood-grain textured paper. Simply fold along the scores and voila: a nutty case to hold your business cards.

newest citizen
Congratulations to Mel Lim and the other 2,000 San Diegans who were sworn in as US citizens last week. YOU are what make America such a wonderful place.
beautiful day
First of all, forgive me for not posting this past week+. I have been a little under the weather.
Emily of Orange Beautiful emailed me her LATTICE Line lookbook and I was blown away by the photography (and the card designs, too!). Congrats, Emily, on a brilliant product line. Not only are the patterns ORIGINAL (yay!), but the custom packaging is beyond amazing. I especially love the "warm" and "cool" stamps. You can purchase her cards at her Etsy shop here. Can't wait to see what she is dreaming up for the next stationery show!

2009 calendar
After five long years of wanting to letterpress my very own calendar, today is the big day! We start printing it today. I'm guessing it will take a few weeks, since we have to squeeze the press runs in between "real" (read: invitation) jobs. I'll take photos and show the progress. Hoping to have them in stores next month.

business and creative exchange
As a small business owner running a creative company, I get questions from "fans" about starting or running a business often. I try to answer as many as I can via email, but sometimes I just don't have time to get to them all.
My dear, talented friend Mel Lim gets questions all the time, too. She decided to start sharing the answers with the general public and founded BACE: Business and Creative Exchange along with her husband (also an artist), Joe Keylon. BACE's mission is "to help other aspiring start ups and designers on how to get their products launched by offering them insights to challenges and day-to-day questions faced by creatives who have all the talent in the world but no clue to running a business or launching a line."
BACE tackles issues like how to price your products, how to deal with rude buyers, how to decide if a trade show is right for you. Mel and Joe are always candid and honest, and I highly recommend BACE as required reading for anyone considering getting into the creative biz.

back to school
all products shown available at target
All the products show above are from Target. How cute is that alarm clock? I have a natural alarm clock that wakes me up around 5:30 a.m. every morning (my four-year-old!) so I guess I don't really need it. But how cute! The Samsung 8GB USB power drive would come in super handy. I looked at the Target store yesterday but they didn't have any good ones in stock.
There is something about the Back To School season that literally makes my heart race. All those bins of brand new pencils, pens, protractors, rulers, elmer's glue. Oh, my. I think I am not alone in my school supply obsession, as I was certainly not the only person shopping the back to school section at Target with no school-age children.
I bought myself a brand new box of 64 crayons ($2!), a pack of white pencils with green erasers, and some storage cubes ... all for the studio, of course. J's desk chair broke (he's been sitting precariously on the edge of his seat for weeks) and I think we'll finally replace it with the chartreuse swivel chair above (the one in the middle). The green "pod chair" on the left would look awesome in a trade show booth, but it's hard to tell from the photo how much of a footprint it would consume.

synchro
Why does everyone laugh when I tell them my favorite Olympic sport is synchronized swimming? I love it! When I was a little girl I was on a synchro team and traveled the US for meets. I haven't discovered a better (or more fun) workout to this day. You can signup at NBC Olympics for email alerts so you won't miss any syncho action! Why are you laughing?

extraordinary desserts
Today I am headed downtown to pick up a friend at the airport, which is a very good excuse (in my opinion) to head to Extraordinary Desserts in Little Italy (in downtown San Diego) for a celebratory, um, snack. My friend is a confessed dessert-junkie, so I think this will be the perfect introduction to a fabulous weekend.

shop we love: lesesne
The very best thing about trade shows is all the fun people we meet! A few years ago we met Barbara and Bryte at the National Stationery Show. They were shopping for their fabulous store in Charleston, South Carolina: Lesesne. Every time we go back to Charleston we hang out with Barbara and Bryte and have such a blast. Of course I can never help myself from buying goodies in their Upper King Street store, either. This time I bought that little green vase (lower right photo) and a gorgeous two-tone torchon (kitchen towel).

martha at walmart
Martha Stewart now has cute wedding goodies at Walmart! Some of these items seem nearly identical to the Martha Stewart wedding diy products sold at Michael's and I am curious as to how this all works. I would have guessed that Michael's had some sort of exclusive agreement ... not to mention Martha's long standing relationship with K-Mart? I think it's fabulous that good design is now available at all these places ... but I'm really curious about how MSLO is able to pull it all off without stepping on the toes of their partners.
It makes sense to me that Martha is able to sell sheets at both K-Mart and Macy's ... they are different price points (and quality). But it seems odd to me that Martha sells the same product category in the same price point to two big box chains that compete against each other (i.e. diy paper favor boxes and crepe paper flowers at Walmart and Michael's). How do they pull this off? My little stores complain when someone else in their entire city carries my line of stationery, so how does Martha pull this off? Tips, please, Martha!!!
Also... check out the new Walmart logo. Great post about it here on the Brand New blog.

titus missing
I am extremely sad to report that Titus has been missing for a few days. If you live in the neighborhood please keep an eye out for him and grab him if you see him. FYI he is deaf.
UPDATE 8/4: It pains me to write that Titus will not be coming home. Coyotes. Many thanks to everyone for their kind words and thoughts. We miss Titus very much and it has been a difficult week for us all.
